Description
This is a book about the shadow of Franco’s dictatorship lingering over democratic Spain, fostering a climate of rampant corruption and sleaze, particularly in politics and the public sector. Public life during the dictatorship was characterised by exploitation and terror, giving rise to horror stories from the post-war period, when a purge of political opponents left mass graves throughout the entire peninsula, only know being opened up and analysed by the grandchildren of Franco’s victims.
The term ‘historical memory’ is used to describe this period of amnesia and the subsequent revelations and political furore, involving this generation of grandchildren and culminating in a reappraisal of the savagery of the dictatorship. The notorious case of child robbery, beginning in the post civil war era and continuing beyond the transition to democracy, was a macabre attempt to rob the Republicans of their children, who were given in adoption against their parents’ will to Franco’s followers, a custom which continued in South America, in Chile and Argentina. The role of the Church, as a pillar of the dictatorship, has continued after the transition to democracy as a number of priests and nuns were, allegedly, involved in these cases of child robbery, the church having been responsible for adoption during and after the dictatorship and, potentially, hundreds of thousands of Spaniards have had their identity robbed or lost their children in this macabre way.
These crimes, carried out under the dictatorship, are now deemed to be crimes against humanity or genocide and an attempt to indict General Franco and his cronies, posthumously has cost a High Court Judge, his post. The internationally renowned expert in human rights, Judge Baltasar Garzón, was responsible for indicting Pinochet and having him placed under house arrest in London. The former judge was also involved in the major corruption trial involving the ruling PP right leaning party and the abuse of power and receipt of black money, allegedly, now in bank accounts all over the world in the name of the former treasurer Luis Bárcenas, presently in jail. The pre-trial hearings are taking place via video conference in order for the crimes of Dictatorship to be heard in Argentina, under international jurisdiction, whereby crimes against humanity, such as those who were left in mass graves and were missing have no Statute of Limitations.
Of interest also is the work of the Associations of Historical Memory, founded by the grandsons of victims, who brought charges against the dictatorship, for the crimes against their family members. The last ten years has seen a cultural outburst of enormous vitality and creativity producing novels, cinema with the theme of the forgotten history of Spain and commemorating those shot at dawn, anonymously, or who died in prison or were torn from their families never to be seen again.
The scandal involving the royal household, centering on the King’s son-in-law, arraigned on corruption charges involving the governing PP party officials, particularly in Mallorca, and the attempt to arraign his wife, Infanta Elena, has caused a major constitutional crisis. The discovery of the King’s bank account in Switzerland containing 100 million euros, coupled with his involvement with Princess Corinna, the divorced partner of minor European royalty, allegedly in receipt of millions of euros commission for her representational role in international business deals involving the Spanish state, has added to this climate of distrust in the monarchy and to the public repudiation of the popular Queen Sofia at an event she attended for charity.
The book also contains personal anecdotes and irreverent opinions on the subject of corruption in employment practices within the public sector, infringing the spirit of European legislation. It is not a purely academic tome, but a book written to some extent from personal conviction and experienc
Eternal Spain corruption and crisis eBook DrTrish Watson
This small book provides a very lucid and compact review of the corruption problems in Spain. That issue is second only to massive unemployment in the country as a source of concern, as confirmed in a recent public poll, so this book is also very timely. It will help explain the situation to those who do not or cannot follow the samizdat Spanish press- the parts that are not controlled or heavily influenced by the major political parties in the country. The book fills in some of the information needed to understand the most recent Transparency International report which downgrades Spain ten ranks in the list and for that matter, the highly critical "Auken" report adopted a few years ago by the EU Parliament.Product details
